If you watch the pidgins long enough you start to see some interesting mannerisms emerge. They’re just like us. Seriously, they take on the same attitude as the people of the city. These pidgins are clearly streetwise, and not to be messed with. Some are tough guys, some are jenny from the block types, some are bookish types, and some are entrepreneurs.

This gaggle was definitely a tough guy heyfuckyoufageddaboutit group.

It was a good day to be out on the town. There was a cool breeze and and the light was great. There’s no light quite like a sun reflecting off a glass building.

For the conservative folks it was the damned parading on wheels … it was like that moment in the ten commandments where Charlton Heston comes down off the mountain and the Jews are all worshiping idols and fornicating all over the place .

There was one of those folks right there at the train stop. He held a bible aloft and denounced a few things here and there, the usual method for his type. He shouted at the queers and of course they all fed him exactly what his mental picture of a homosexual was. This only leaves him more resolute in his quest. I wish they’d all give it up. It’s a dead end for both sides.

Getting to the parade path was work. We had to sneek around, cross some blocked streets, and duck some police tape. The event staff was much too nice. If someone went over the tape they could only say “please don’t do that” “oh no…sir!” “gosh” You almost felt sorry for them and in the guilt, actually listened, until they turned their back.

Within the parade the vibe was good. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Lots of naked fat girls with pasties. Lots of loosely shrouded wieners. Lots of Asses. Lots of tan lines. Lots of politicians, drag queens. Lots of random weird handouts: Jersey Boys prophylactic matchbooks, spanking sticks, free hot dog coupons, Kathy Griffin faces, and more beads than one could ever whore themselves for. It was basically Mardi Gras – without the booze – done gay.

It started around 12pm and was still going well after I left at 3:30pm. Our group was too sun baked and hungry to stick around to the end so we headed to a place called the Pick Me Up cafe. It was by far the tastiest food I’ve tasted in the hoods thus far. I overheard someone say it was the second largest Pride Parade in the United States or the world. I could believe it. It was definitely the gayest day of my life.

Cold, Wet. There was a fog hanging over the city. You could only see maybe 20 stories up. Beyond that it was a cloud city.

I spent the day wandering. I had written a list of addresses with directions but I had no idea where the streets were to begin with. On top of that it was raining and dripping in just about every direction so any attempts to check the notebook would lead to a soaked notebook.

Apparently on a rainy day in Chicago people nest in coffee shops and never leave. There’s a Starbucks on just about every corner and every one I looked in was filled.

I really had no idea what I was doing or where I was going. The plan was just to get there. This has been a kind of a metaphor for my life up to this point.

I got splashed from gutter water on the curb. I kept finding myself standing in puddles; too soaked to feel the difference.

So the day was spent walking the streets in the rain.

It was pretty horrible until I walked into Millennium park and found an orchestra rehearsing.

A symphony in the rain:
